Cyclone 318J Self-Cleaning & Cooling Single Seal
The Cyclone 318J is an internationally patented single mechanical seal built for pumps handling slurries and other particle-laden media. Its distinctive Cyclone 'ear' geometry sets up a fluid flow that throws abrasive particles back into the pump, keeping the seal faces clean and cool without flush water.
Product Benefits
- No external flush needed: Abrasive particles are the classic killer of mechanical seals on slurry duty, and the usual defence of a constant external water flush costs water, dilutes the product and adds piping to maintain.
- Hydraulic self-cleaning: The 318J solves the problem hydraulically: the patented ear geometry works with angled stationary parts above it to induce a powerful flow that ejects particles back into the pump.
- Clean, cool seal chamber: The seal-face chamber stays clean and cool on its own, enabling genuinely flushless operation on dirty media.
- Lower running costs: That means longer seal life on abrasive services, no product dilution, and one less utility system to run.
Where It's Used
- Slurry pump duty: The 318J is typically fitted to slurry pumps handling abrasive media.
- Proven on real media: It has been tested at real production concentrations on paper stock, sand, gypsum, sewage and sugar syrup.
- Slurry-heavy industries: Its home industries are pulp and paper, mining, metals processing and power generation.
Good to Know
- Hard-wearing construction: Both seal faces are in hard TC material to shrug off abrasion, with FKM secondary seals and 316L stainless metal parts for chemical resistance.
- Strong ratings for its class: It handles substantial pressures, hot media and high shaft speeds for its class.
- Simple single-seal setup: As a single seal, it keeps the installation simpler than a double-seal-plus-barrier-fluid arrangement.
- Clean-media sibling: For clean water and oil services without particles, its sibling, the Cyclone 318T, is the more natural fit.
