3171 API 610 Compliant VS4 Vertical Sump Pumps

The API 3171 is a vertical sump pump engineered to comply with ISO 13709 / API 610 as a Type VS4 design. Built on the long-established 3171 "Veteran" product line, it lowers a rugged wet end into the pit itself, giving refineries and process plants a compliant, low-maintenance way to empty sumps of demanding liquids.

Product Benefits

  • Built for punishing sump duty: Intermittent operation, entrained solids, and long unsupported shafts punish lesser designs. The API 3171 is engineered to withstand exactly these conditions.
  • Heavy-duty shaft support: A heavy-duty one-piece shaft is guided by closely spaced, self-lubricating carbon/graphite steady bearings.
  • API-compliant thrust bearings: Duplex back-to-back angular-contact thrust bearings comply with API requirements.
  • Solids-tolerant impeller: A fully open impeller with back pump-out vanes tolerates the debris typical of sumps.
  • Easy maintenance: External impeller adjustment restores performance without dismantling the pump, and extensive parts commonality with the standard 3171 simplifies spares and service.

Where It's Used

  • Refinery sump service: This is the pump for refinery and process-plant sump duty, where drainage pits collect hydrocarbons and process liquids that must be transferred out reliably.
  • Flexible pit depths: The vertical, pit-mounted arrangement handles a wide range of pit depths.
  • VS4 compliance: The compliant design lets it stand in for VS4 requirements on API-governed sites.

Good to Know

  • Wide material choice: API material classes span carbon steel through stainless, duplex, and super-duplex grades, so construction can be matched to corrosive or aggressive sump contents.
  • Protected hydraulic end: A replaceable suction liner, removable suction cover, and strainer plate protect the hydraulic end and simplify wear-part renewal.
  • API 682 sealing: The seal chamber follows API 682 practice, and the discharge uses a higher-rated flange as standard.
  • Protected bearings: The disc coupling is precision balanced, and bronze labyrinth bearing isolators help keep contamination out of the bearing housing.
